WM: What inspired you to get involved in fitness and become a personal trainer?
MK: I was overweight and miserable and ending a terrible relationship. On a whim I signed up for the Minneapolis AIDS ride from Minneapolis to Chicago. I didn't even own a bike! I was just sick of feeling like shit and ready to do something about it. On the AIDS ride, I wanted to fall over going up a hill. A rider sporting a HIV+ flag sped by and all I could think was that life is literally passing me by. What am I doing? It was a very empowering experience. I started eating better, working out to fitness videos and biking. I split with my ex.
Then I got cancer and started doing a bunch of research on everything about health to help get through treatment and maintain remission. It was like opening Pandora's box: I wanted to share everything I learned to help "regular people." I became the health go-to person for friends. I made it through cancer treatment and became a personal trainer. That was more than 10 years ago now.
WM: What is your fitness philosophy?
MK: It's not about looking good. I incorporate education, mental and emotional health. My clients inspire me every day - they give so much and are so vulnerable with me. It's a big responsibility but I really, really like it.
WM: How do you approach working with a person?
MK: Before I train anyone, I sit down with them to talk about their goals, in fitness and beyond. All my programming is individualized, so it's really important that what I offer is what they need and are looking for. I offer my clients step-by-step guidance and realistic goals. I'm a positive, goofy trainer who operates with no BS - I'm very straight forward. I see most clients 3 days per week, which is helpful in holding them accountable to their goals, but also let's us keep a pulse on what's working in their training program and what's not.
WM: What’s it like to be your client?
MK: When I show up, it's about you. My goal for each client is that they posses the skills to live their life healthy, strong, and empowered in order to be the extraordinary person they are meant to be.
